KURE BEACH, N.C. - A week ago, Bruce Everhart, the 55-year-old owner of Tradewinds Motel, knocked on the door of Room 231 to talk with two of his best customers.

Dewey McGlamery answered, tears welling above the creases of his face. Mr. McGlamery; his wife, Ann; and Mr. Everhart sat inside the room overlooking the Atlantic, Mr. Everhart perched on the edge of a bed, talking about the past three decades.
