STATESBORO, Ga. - Erk Russell was eulogized Sunday at the 50- yard line of the field where he made national champions of a Georgia Southern football program he'd built from scratch, a place where his legend will never die.

More than 2,000 fans, former players and coaches poured into Paulson Stadium for Mr. Russell's funeral two days after he died at age 80 of an apparent stroke. Mourners ran the gamut from diehard local fans in ball caps and T-shirts to dignitaries including Gov. Sonny Perdue.
