It seems strange, doesn't it, not to have those pesky hobbits groveling for Oscar gold.
For the first time in three years, the Academy Awards are not overshadowed by The Lord of the Rings trilogy, the furry-footed fantasy epic that earned the adoration of film fans, critics and guys who live in their parents' basement the world over. The result? An Oscar race that, for the first time in years, might actually be too close to call. Competition in all the marquee categories, with the exception of best actor, is extremely tight.
