Political Wings Must Stop Bickering

Summary

Recently, a research psychiatrist did an interesting study on human behavior. He questioned a group of people and found that they were either "surround dependent" or "surround independent." He defined a person's "surround" as the things they value most on different levels: spiritual, emotional, social, political, etc. So a person's religion, their politics, the club they belong to, the house they live in, the car they drive, the school they went to - and on and on - is their surround. It is like their foundation.

"Surround dependent" people were found to be unconsciously fiercely loyal to their surround. Facts (and by extension right and wrong), once the surround was constructed, very rarely played a part in this loyalty. An attack on their surround was viewed as a personal attack on them, and they reacted, impulsively and inexplicably, very defensively toward that attack. Question their religion, attack their president's policies, disrespect their neighborhood - those are fighting words. "Surround independent" people tend to examine each question on its own merits, allowing facts to sway their decisions.
