Is your mother-in-law's tongue 3 feet long and viciously barbed? Mine is, and I've been known to neglect her for months at a time. This sansevieria is probably the only plant I can grow indoors without a gradual ugly death. The reason? Good old Mom thrives on neglect.

I have seen this plant in its natural habitat of South Africa, hunkered down for the long dry season while all else has lost the last of its green. There bushmen harvest the incredibly strong fibers that run the length of the leaf, hence its other common name: bowstring hemp.
