Parents, School Must Address Hurtful Cyber-Bullying

Summary

My 10-year-old daughter is experiencing cyber-bullying. The things the other girls say about her are simply unbelievable and very hurtful, which is interfering with her schoolwork, behavior and self-esteem. How do parents help their kids with this new kind of bullying? The teachers are pretty much staying out of it; this is unacceptable to us. They do not realize how serious this problem can be.

From reader Teri Schroeder, Carlsbad, Calif.: I am the CEO- program director of a site that deals specifically with this type of challenge. As you have experienced with your daughter, bullying is no longer about the strong picking on the weak in the schoolyard. The physical assault has been replaced by a 24-hour-per-day, seven- day-a-week online bashing. Savvy students are using Instant Messaging, e-mails, chatrooms and Web sites they create to humiliate a peer. In 2004, our site, www.isafe.org, surveyed 1,500 students in grades four through eight. Here are some statistics that will validate that the situation your daughter is experiencing is very real, which necessitates the school taking a very hard look at the impact this matter has had on your daughter and her schoolwork. Statistics show that 42 percent of kids have been bullied while online. One in four have had it happen more than once; 35 percent of kids have been threatened online; 58 percent of kids admit someone has said mean or hurtful things to them online; 58 percent have not told their parents or an adult about something mean or hurtful that happened to them online. If you have not already done so, I urge you to request a meeting with the principal and the parents of the girl that is causing this problem. It is important to share with the school that you challenge your daughter's safety and well-being there because of the disruption this situation continues to cause within your daughter's school day.
