Among heaps of decaying brick, abandoned trash and splintered wood, there is a silence broken only by the blaring whistle of an approaching train or the soothing shovel of dirt by a lone worker.

It is here, near the corner of Walker and Ninth streets, that Clyde Bailey says he's worked alone for the past four years, clearing a site where Swift Meat Packing once operated. It's an area Augusta's Judicial Center Subcommittee dropped the gavel on Friday, voting to abandon it as a possible judicial center site.
