It's crunch time for the plan to have Savannah River Site turn the nation's excess plutonium into fuel for commercial nuclear power plants.

Here's the good news: The U.S. Senate has voted to spend $419 million in the next fiscal year on the planned mixed-oxide, or MOX, plant that is supposed to turn at least 34 metric tons of plutonium into reactor fuel. The congressional delegations in our two-state area strongly back the project, and the U.S. Department of Energy still plans to begin construction on the facility this fall.
