Question: Was Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld correct when he said that the military, not the news media, first told us about the abuse of Iraqi prisoners?

Answer: Goodness gracious, as the secretary might put it, his statement is extremely misleading. The military did everything it could to keep reports of prisoner abuse under wraps. It was digging by the news media that brought the scandal to light.
