EDGEFIELD, S.C. - Joe James can trace his fascination with the American chestnut tree back to his childhood.

"When I was 10, my dad showed me the snags from dead stumps all across the Smokies," said Dr. James, an American Chestnut Foundation board member whose restoration experiments include a test plot in Edgefield County.
