Thank you for your ethanol article ("Xethanol acquires Pfizer site," Aug. 24). A gold star for Xethanol Corp. What a fine public service to give us a way to drive and not at the same time fund those dedicated to our butchery as their means to an eternity in paradise.
A quarter-century ago, DuPont-Savannah River Plant, USDA/ Clemson, SCANA and the South Carolina Agriculture Commission proposed making some 3 billion gallons of ethanol a year at SRP using heat from the then-operating SRP reactors and/or waste heat from SCANA power stations. We concluded that cost might be a dollar a gallon if locally grown feed stocks, not corn, were used. Clemson recommended turnips and sweet potatoes, pointing out that, compared to an acre of corn-belt corn, an acre of CSRA turnips could produce about three times the ethanol, and required but a small fraction of the fertilizer and energy.See the full content of this document
