House Softens Cuts to Education Programs

Summary


Budget writers in the Democrat-controlled Georgia House approved a $16.2 billion budget Friday that would soften some of the cuts the governor recommended in education and health programs while continuing to pay for books and fees for HOPE scholars.

To make ends meet, however, the proposal for the year beginning July 1 postpones the 2 percent pay raise the governor promised to teachers and state employees from September and October to Jan. 1, 2005.
