CHARLESTON, S.C. - After a career spanning more than a half- century, don't ask U.S. Sen. Ernest "Fritz" Hollings how he will be remembered in history books. He's retiring from politics - not from life.

"People ask you your legacy or your most embarrassing moment. I never, ever lived that way," the silver-haired Democrat said recently as he was closing his office in Charleston's historic waterfront Custom House.
