Study Faults Use of Antibiotics Surgery Infections Prove Costly

Summary


About half of all surgery patients are not getting the right antibiotic treatment to prevent infection after major surgery, including many who are kept on the therapy too long, which could aid the rise of resistant bacteria, health officials said Monday.

Augusta hospitals, however, said they already are following the guidelines and are seeing improvements in infection rates. Still, it is something patients may want to discuss with their surgeons.
