Family Mistaken On Age of Covered Dish

Summary


Enclosed is a picture of a bowl my mother-in-law (age 84) gave me for my 61st birthday. She received it from her mother, who received it from her mother, who, in turn, received it from her mother. We feel it was a wedding present to this distant ancestor, who was married in 1869. This would make this bowl at least 136 years old. It is 9 inches across and 5 1/2 inches deep and I have drawn the mark found on the bottom. Any information would be greatly appreciated. - L. and P. K., Zanesville, Ohio:

A: This is a hard letter to answer because the story of this lovely, covered vegetable dish passing through all those generations since 1869 could not possibly be entirely correct. Now we know that this is a bucket of cold water, but it is not unusual in our experience for family history, as it relates to a particular cherished heirloom, to be somewhat, if not completely, off the mark.
