Summary
Congressional Democrats have been trying to separate themselves from the hateful, partisan put-downs of their national party chairman, Howard Dean. But in equating U.S. treatment of terrorist detainees at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, with the death camps of mass murderers Hitler, Stalin and Pol Pot, the Democrats' No. 2 man in the U.S. Senate, Dick Durbin of Illinois, went way beyond anything Dean has said.
Durbin wasn't insulting Republicans - his remarks were directed at U.S. troops. Cribbing from an FBI report Durbin said, "If I read to you ... what Americans had done to prisoners in their control, you would most certainly believe this must have been done by Nazis, Soviets in their gulags ...
