Democratic Party Supported Slavery

Summary


The Republican Party was founded in 1854, specifically to oppose slavery. In contrast, the Democratic Party was the party of slavery. A recent documentary on PBS titled Reconstruction makes clear how the Democrats established and maintained a political monopoly in the South.

The South had been predominately Democrat, with the white planter class exercising influence before the Civil War. They, of course, were adamantly pro-slavery, and were instrumental in propelling the south from the Union. After the war, the same Democrat white planter class again became the dominant factor in Southern politics, establishing groups such as the Ku Klux Klan.
