ATLANTA - Eric Peterson lives only eight miles from the route his great-great-grandfather took during the Civil War through what is now suburban Atlanta. But Mr. Peterson's ancestor wasn't a gray- coated Rebel; he was a Union soldier from Wisconsin taking part in Gen. Sherman's march through Georgia.

As Civil War history groups prepare for Memorial Day events across the South, they're bumping into more fellow Civil War buffs from the North.
