The film, based on the DC/Vertigo comic Hellblazer, manages to deftly sidestep the pitfalls that hobble many adaptations from the medium - most of the time. A piece more concerned with character and conflict than accelerating from one action-packed set piece to another, it never succumbs to the lure of the Big Dumb Thrill.
