Candidates Play On Workers' Fears

Summary


The world has become a scary place for American workers, and their fear is understandable. Workers don't understand the global economy, which is creating stress and anxiety in their lives, and they see free trade as the enemy. Unfortunately, what they are hearing from the Democratic presidential candidates is mostly pandering and demagoguery that only heightens their anxieties and stirs dangerous protectionist sentiments.

The fulminations of the Democratic presidential candidates against the "outsourcing" of U.S. jobs to India and other countries by "Benedict Arnold companies and CEOs" and "bad trade agreements," including those signed by President Clinton, may be good politics in an election that is likely to be dominated by economic issues. But the candidates offer American workers false hope instead of straight talk about the economic realities of today's world.
