Bush Vetoes Another Bill On Embryonic Stem Cells

THE NEWS: President Bush dusted off his veto pen Wednesday, again rejecting legislation that would lift restrictions on federal funding of medical research using embryonic stem cells. At the same time, he signed an executive order urging scientists toward "ethically responsible" research in the field.

THE ORDER: He announced no new federal dollars for stem cell research, and his order wouldn't allow researchers to do anything they couldn't do under existing restrictions. The order encourages scientists to work with the government to add other kinds of stem cell research to the list of projects eligible for federal funding - so long as it does not create, harm or destroy human embryos.
