After the cannon smoke had cleared, after the rifles had all been fired and the victors had staked their claim, Capt. Jeff Stephens led his unit of battered and bloodied soldiers to the haven of a rudimentary field hospital, their moans of pain the lasting echo of battle.

"I've got wounded men coming through," the Confederate commander bellowed as his men limped into the Independent Field Hospital, a less-heralded scene recreated for visitors to Saturday's 10th annual Battle of Aiken. "Help my men!"
