Republicans are attacking U.S. Sen. Russ Feingold of Wisconsin because he is calling for censure of President Bush. Bush broke the law with his warrantless spying on Americans. The Republicans - who have been wringing their hands in disbelief at the lowest poll numbers in history for Bush - believe that, by bashing Feingold, they can raise Bush's poll numbers; The Augusta Chronicle is among them ("Censure Feingold instead," March 15). This will hardly be the case.

Polls show that 60 percent of the electorate are unhappy with the Bush presidency. The Republicans fear the obvious: the election of Democrats.
