Proponents of the taxpayer-funded sports arena are claiming that this project will be an economic shot in the arm for Augusta, and will revitalize a depressed part of the city. However, these assumptions are based on myths rather than reality.

Financing the arena will take $60 million out of the local economy through property taxes. An economic shot in the arm assumes an infusion of outside capital, but the arena will be financed totally from local taxation, resulting in a zero-sum gain.
