Summary


FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. - One moment, William Morgan was watching TV reports on Hurricane Katrina in his New Orleans apartment. A moment later, floodwaters raged into his home with such force that his head was bumping the ceiling, leaving him 2 inches of breathing space.

At age 72, with his legs amputated by illness, Mr. Morgan is no great swimmer and no muscle man. But with a coolness of mind that he says surprised him, the disabled shipyard worker slipped through the watery fingers of Hurricane Katrina's grasp.
