Today, we honor our mothers. The earliest Mother's Day celebrations can be traced back to ancient Greece. However, our modern-day observance is more akin to "Mothering Sunday," a celebration started in England in the 1600s, whereby poor servants were given the day off and encouraged to return home to spend the day with their mothers.
In the United States, Mother's Day wasn't established as a national holiday until 1911, when President Woodrow Wilson made the official announcement and proclaimed that the second Sunday of May was to be observed as Mother's Day.See the full content of this document
