Springtime Fishing Picking Up

At last! Hybrids and striped bass have been schooling in areas of lower Strom Thurmond Lake; largemouth bass have been on the beds, and crappies have moved next to shoreline cover, making for exciting times.

Holder Faces Tough Times at Thomson

Terry Holder's magic touch might take awhile at Thomson. The legendary coach has eight state titles on his resume. But it's been a chore keeping the Bulldogs above .500 so far. Thomson is currently 5-6 overall and 2-2 in Region 3-AAA.

Across the Region

School district hit with Confederate flag suit FLORENCE S.C. - The family of a high school sophomore is suing school officials over whether the girl can wear clothing with images of the Confederate flag.

Today in History

1975 UCLA beats Kentucky 92-85 for its 10th NCAA basketball title under head coach John Wooden. Wooden finishes with a 620-147 career record after announcing his retirement two days earlier.

Bonds' Legacy Will Be Confined to Era

For all the huffing and puffing he did Thursday, the only house Bud Selig will blow down in the end is his own. He can't really get Barry Bonds, the prime suspect in the book that finally convinced the commissioner there was a problem. He won't be able to stop the Giants slugger from hitting home runs once the season starts, and there's no guarantee he can suspend him.

Smoltz Changing Things Up

VIERA, Fla. - Somewhere in between John Smoltz's 17th and 18th major league seasons, the Atlanta Braves starter seems to have become more spiritual. No, not in the religious sense - Smoltz has long been a devout Christian - but more in the way of, say, finding his own pitching nirvana.

Nationals Grant Tucker Unconditional Release; Two Others Cut

JUPITER, Fla. - Javy Lopez spent so much time learning to play first base this spring, he neglected the best part of his game: hitting. Lopez was batting .139 through Wednesday. He wasn't fielding very well at his new position, either. So Baltimore Orioles manager Sam Perlozzo decided to put a temporary halt to the plan of converting Lopez from a catcher to a first baseman.

Tigers Giving ; Aching State< a Little Relief

INDIANAPOLIS - Glen Davis stood next to the dying man, holding up an IV bag while doctors worked furiously to save his life. "One of his lungs had collapsed," Davis said, his voice barely above a whisper as he recounted that awful day. "He couldn't breathe. You could see him struggling for air."

TRIVIA WHICH TEAM WON THE FIRST NCAA WOMEN'S BASKETBALL CHAMPIONSHIP GAME TO GO INTO OVERTIME?

Wolfpack Show Off Talent in Easy Win

Greenbrier's boys soccer team had another name for its schedule this week. "We called this championship week," Wolfpack coach Chip Warren said. "We went on the road to play a defending state champion in Aquinas on Tuesday. And then we had the two-time defending champion in Class AAA tonight at Richmond."

Knights End Rival's Run

Eighty minutes wasn't enough to decide a winner between the Evans and Lakeside girls soccer teams Thursday night. Neither were two five-minute overtime periods and nine penalty kicks.

Coles in the Hunt; Lefty Ontop Again

DULUTH, Ga. - High stakes golf is rarely played during the BellSouth Classic. The field is a mix of top players getting ready for next week's Masters Tournament and lesser-knowns hoping for a strong early- season finish that would boost their chances of keeping their playing privileges for next year.

Ex-Senator Mitchell Torun Inquiry

NEW YORK - Baseball began its investigation Thursday into alleged steroid use by Barry Bonds and others, and the head of the inquiry immediately came under attack because of his close ties to the sport. In the wake of a searing book about Bonds, commissioner Bud Selig appointed former Senate Majority Leader George Mitchell - and currently a director of the Boston Red Sox - to lead the investigation.

Ochoa Ties Major Mark, Leads by 4

RANCHO MIRAGE, Calif. - Lorena Ochoa had only 100 or so people following her record round Thursday in the Kraft Nabisco Championship, which was fine with her. She was able to hear a familiar voice, her father, urging her to attack the flags and stick it close. "Just like this," Javier Ochoa said to her after she began the first round with a 9-iron to two feet to set up a birdie.

Rhyme, Reason Lacking From This Invite

When something stops making sense, it stops being useful. The special foreign exemption option retained by the Masters Tournament has reached that point. On Monday, the Masters Committee, at its discretion, issued its latest head-scratcher. With its third consecutive nod to the lucrative Asian television market, a special invitation was offered to Thongchai Jaidee of Thailand to compete in next week's major championship.

Gladiators Hold Off Lynx

The Augusta Lynx once again gave division-leading Gwinnett a hard time Thursday night at Augusta-Richmond County Civic Center, but this time, the Gladiators prevailed. The Lynx were trying to stay undefeated at home against the league's top offensive team, but Gwinnett rookie Guillaume Desbiens scored on a nifty move with 5:26 remaining to give the Gladiators a 1-0 victory.

Gladiators Hold Off Lynx

Augusta Lynx forward Nicolas Corbeil said he shouldn't miss on chances like he had Thursday night against division-leading Gwinnett. But the way Gladiators goaltender Adam Berkhoel played, it wouldn't have been appropriate any other way.
