KAPALUA, Hawaii - Stuart Appleby had to go an extra hole to make it three in a row Sunday at the Mercedes Championships, making a birdie on the par-5 18th to force a playoff against Vijay Singh, then winning on the same hole with a bunker shot that nearly went in. Appleby joined Gene Littler in 1955-57 as the only players to capture the winners-only tournament three straight times.
ATLANTA - All Anthony Morrow wanted out of Georgia Tech teammate Jeremis Smith was a smile. So Morrow jumped on Smith's back and applied a mock headlock after Sunday's 60-58 victory over No. 11 Boston College. INDIANAPOLIS - Football, baseball and men's basketball appear to be the Division I sports in greatest jeopardy of NCAA sanctions when the governing body releases an academic progress report in February. Sports failing to meet NCAA standards for eligibility and progress toward graduation could lose scholarships for one year under the academic reform package approved by the NCAA two years ago.

AUSTIN, Texas - Vince Young is headed to the NFL. The Texas quarterback, who led the Longhorns to their first national championship in 36 years, announced Sunday he would make himself eligible for the April draft.

COLUMBIA - Chris Lofton had 18 points and Tennessee overcame a 15- point, second-half deficit to continue its best start in five years with a 76-69 victory against South Carolina on Sunday. At first, the Vols didn't look anything like the surprise club that won at Texas and topped the Southeastern Conference in scoring. But behind Lofton's outside shooting - he was 6 of 7 from 3-point range - Tennessee moved to 10-1, its best mark since starting 16-1 in 2000-01.
MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Rodney Carney scored 21 points and Darius Washington had seven of his 14 points during a key stretch to help No. 4 Memphis hold off Winthrop 73-63 on Sunday. Carney made 7-of-14 shots, including 4-of-9 from 3-point range as the Tigers (13-2) won their second consecutive game after losing to No. 15 Texas last week. The Tigers' only other loss was to No. 1 Duke in the Preseason NIT championship game.
VILLANOVA, Pa. - West Virginia couldn't make Villanova miss shots, so the Mountaineers forced the ball away from them. Joe Herber scored 23 points and Kevin Pittsnogle had 22, leading No. 24 West Virginia to a 91-87 upset over No. 3 Villanova on Sunday.
TORONTO - Vince Carter made a fadeaway 3-pointer with 0.1 seconds left and finished with 42 points against his former team Sunday, leading New Jersey past the Toronto Raptors 105-104 for the Nets' 10th consecutive victory. ATHENS, Ga. - Sherill Baker had 20 points and extended her career mark with four steals to help lead No. 17 Georgia to an 89-70 victory over Florida on Sunday. Tasha Humphrey led Georgia (11-3 overall, 2-0 Southeastern Conference) with 26 points and 15 rebounds. Florida (13-2, 1-1) had its 11-game winning streak end.
