Finds Editorials Inconsistent

I found your Jan. 16 editorial, "Pack your bags, we're going to France," quite confusing. You stated, "Government has absolutely no business telling business how to operate." This from the same newspaper that wholeheartedly supported government telling businesses how to operate concerning the smoking ban. The editorial shows exactly why all business owners should be allowed to operate as they wish, just as they may decide whether or not to sell liquor.

Democrats Proud of Killing Patriot Act Be Aware: It's Been Working

As the Senate prepares for a showdown vote to reauthorize the Patriot Act, members of the World's Greatest Deliberative Body should deliberate on this: Had it existed, could the Patriot Act have prevented the Sept. 11 massacre? "I think if the Patriot Act were in place in the summer of 2001 ... connecting the dots would have been so basic and easy and fundamental," says Debra Burlingame, co-founder of 9/11 Families for a Safe and Strong America (911familiesforamerica.org).

A Victory for Charter Schools South Carolina Will Make It Easier to Innovate in Education

Gov. Mark Sanford made some important progress in his continuing bid to create more charter schools in South Carolina. The state Senate OK'd compromise legislation to make it easier for charter school supporters to get their schools up and running.

Split Infinitives? Yes and No

Not long ago a pained letter came from a high school senior in a Midwestern state. At her earnest request, she remains nameless and stateless. She wrote: "In an assigned editorial about the war in Iraq, I wrote that 'President Bush would like nothing better than to quickly find a way to bring most of the troops home.' Miss Begotten ringed 'to quickly find' and gave me a point off for the S.I., the Split Infinitive. Please tick her off."

Why Science Should Teach Creation

Why do those who teach science in our schools object to teaching creation? There should be none. In fact, if the whole truth of evolution was told, teaching creation would be necessary. The creationist has no problem with the facts of science. It is interpreting the facts that present the problem. Science in itself will support creation.

Applauds French Health Care

The Jan. 16 editorial criticized the Maryland Legislature for compelling Wal-Mart to spend more money on health care insurance for its employees, saying the government has no right "to order businesses to take better care of its employees ... That's a recipe for the kind of nanny-socialism made famous by France." The fact that more than 38 million Americans lack health insurance makes health care one of the United States' most serious problems. Isn't it time for The Chronicle to turn its atte...

A Blessing in Disguise `Book of Daniel' Was an Affront to Christians, but Awoke a Sleeping Giant

It's hard to know which is worse: Whether the anti-Christian bias in NBC-TV's Book of Daniel was intentional or unconscious. Either way, the abrupt cancellation of the show about a pill- addicted Episcopal priest who has a wildly promiscuous son, a daughter who sells marijuana and regular conversations with a Jesus that might have been inspired by the acerbic David Letterman is a blessing.

Don't Look Too Close; Messy Business of Politics Going On

House Republicans, wounded by lobbyist scandals, have called on the House Ethics Committee to investigate more than 10 Democratic members headed by Jan Schakowsky of Illinois and Nydia Velazquez of New York. Schakowsky's husband, consumer advocate Robert Creamer, has been indicted in a check-kiting scheme. The congresswoman co-signed Creamer's allegedly fraudulent tax returns.

Editorial Roundup What Other Newspapers Are Saying

Congress is problem The problem with congressional ethics reform is, those who need to reform are proposing the remedy.
