Adroin's Gamble Pays Off

DENVER - Danny Ardoin wasn't sure if he wanted to go through it again. After a decade in baseball and only a handful of games in the majors, another year of long bus rides and small stadiums wasn't all that appealing. It wasn't until Ardoin talked it over with his wife that he decided to give it one last shot. What a decision it's turned out to be.

Delgado Saves Day in Florida's Win

MIAMI - Carlos Delgado hit a two-run triple in the eighth inning, and the Florida Marlins recovered after blowing an early lead to beat the St. Louis Cardinals, 7-6 on Tuesday night. Florida opened an early four-run lead after Miguel Cabrera's three-run homer in the third, but fell behind for the first time when Mark Grud-zielanek's run-scoring groundout gave the Cardinals a 5-4 lead in the eighth.

Humidity, Heat Take Their Toll at Open

NEW YORK - The late summer heat and humidity claimed a few more players at the U.S. Open on Tuesday. Frenchman Michael Llodra fainted after retiring from his first- round match against Carlos Moya, and Spain's Albert Montanes advanced when Victor Hanescu of Romania retired. Britain's Andy Murray threw up during his match, yet went on to win in five sets.

Georgia's Qb Deserves Better From Fans

You are the ones who have already judged D.J. Shockley and determined that he's just another "running" quarterback. You are the ones who have already determined that Georgia's new offensive leader couldn't be as good as the guy he spent his career backing up.

Midland Valley to Redo Greens

Change is in the wind at Midland Valley Country Club. The Graniteville course expects to close for two months next summer to change its greens, which will affect at least one of its two Regions Cup tournaments in August.

Texas Takes First of Two

ARLINGTON, Texas - Mark Teixeira drove in six runs and hit a pair of two-run homers off 16-game winner Jon Garland, leading the Texas Rangers over the Chicago White Sox 8-6 on Tuesday in the first game of a doubleheader. Teixeira's 33rd and 34th homers gave him six multihomer games this season and 10 in his career. He also matched his season high for RBI.

Roddick Is Latest Upset Victim

NEW YORK - Gilles Muller, who at 22 might already be the greatest player in Luxembourg's insignificant tennis history, used his precise left-handed serving and booming forehands late Tuesday night to overpower Andy Rod-dick in the second shocking upset in as many days at the U.S. Open. Muller hammered and slashed 24 aces, 18 in the first two sets, as he tore through Roddick, 7-6 (4), 7-6 (8), 7-6 (1), to reach the second round against Robby Ginepri, Roddick's good friend who defeat Guillermo...

Vols Ready to Defend Title

It was a heck of an off-season for the dean of Southeastern Conference football coaches, Tennessee's Phillip Fulmer. He watched as four of his colleagues quit or were fired. He cringed when an old rival, Steve Spurrier, came back to fill one of those openings. He dealt with the fallout of the Alabama recruiting scandal, of which he played a major role, and closely followed the resulting lawsuits. And then he faced a rash of off-the-field discipline problems that cast a national spotlight o...

Federer Rolls to Easy Victory

NEW YORK - There was a time Roger Federer felt guilty about running his opponent off the court in quick, laughably easy matches. He's obviously gotten over it.

Hokies Looking to Win Without Rings

Don't count Virginia Tech's players among the "me" generation. Flashing the bling-bling is a no-no for the Hokies.

Greenjackets Face Lengthy Trips

The Augusta GreenJackets' 2005 schedule lacked a team from outside Georgia, South Carolina or North Carolina. A quick glance at the 2006 schedule, which the South Atlantic League posted on its Web site Tuesday, shows teams from West Virginia, New Jersey, Ohio, Kentucky and Maryland. The GreenJackets will play every team in the SAL next year, with road trips as far as Eastlake, Ohio, and Lakewood, N.J.

Braves' Hits Aren't Timely

ATLANTA - As trying as some of his innings might be to watch, Jorge Sosa's calling card has been keeping the Braves in games. He again walked the tight-rope Tuesday. Only this time, his teammates weren't there to play safety net in a 3-2 loss to Washington at Turner Field.

Trouble at Plate Hinders Braves

ATLANTA - As trying as some of his innings might be to watch, Jorge Sosa's calling card has been keeping the Braves in games. He was at his tight-rope walk again Tuesday. Only this time, his teammates weren't there to play safety net.

Braves Acquire Veteran

ATLANTA - Veteran bats are a priceless commodity for baseball's stretch run. More so left-handed ones. Doubly so on a team that has a handful of rookies, including three outfielders. The reasons mentioned make Todd Hollandsworth a pretty valuable pickup for the Braves. Atlanta dealt two minor league pitchers to the Cubs late Monday to acquire, in a waiver-wire deal, the outfielder who was the 1996 NL Rookie of the Year.

Owners with Top Pick Face a Dilemma

So you hold the No. 1 pick in your fantasy football draft. Your decision will decide the flow of the most important round of the draft. How ironic that another first round decision is coming to a battle between the Indianapolis Colts and San Diego Chargers.
