Q: Are post-high school options made clear to teens? a. I think so.
"Sit up straight." "Never talk with your mouth full."
Happy holi-daze It's the first week after Thanksgiving, and most of us are already behind.
It may be difficult and costly to accommodate in the short term, but over the long run Columbia County would benefit immensely if it can find a place to display the $10 million big game collection being offered by businessman Soudy Golabchi. This would be a natural history museum that could attract tourists from around the world, hyping not only Columbia County's economy, but that of the region.
First reports were that the newly designated Savannah River National Laboratory came up empty in Congress' humongous $388 billion omnibus spending bill - a disastrous setback that would have stalled upgrading the science center and restricted it from competing for new research dollars. But in the classic Strom Thurmond tradition of overcoming odds to get things done in Washington for the benefit of both the nation and home state constituents, South Carolina's new senior U.S. Sen. Lindsey Gr...
Gramm Is Eyed for Top Treasury Post
With Treasury Secretary John Snow's continuation in office uncertain, the White House is seriously considering former Sen. Phil Gramm of Texas as his possible successor. President Bush has never been an intimate of Gramm's, and did not think of him for Treasury four years ago when he made the disastrous choice of industrialist Paul O'Neill. However, according to sources close to the president, he is giving his fellow Texan a serious look this time. Gramm is now an investment banker.
Election Result `Speaks for Itself'
The Cooks, the Greenbaums and I backed winning candidates in the Nov. 2 election. My winner was President George W. Bush, who will spend the next four years running the country. Their winner was state Sen.-elect Charles Walker, who will spend the next several years trying to stay out of jail.
'Tis the Season for Wretched Excess
The average American expects to spend about $700 on holiday gifts this season. That's less than some women are paying for a haircut in New York. Is this a great country or what?
I read with interest that the Downtown Development Authority has nothing tangible to show after five years of being in existence ("Time for change," Nov. 14). It took them five years to get organized. Does anyone wonder why nothing has been done? This is the same group that opposes the Maxwell House Apartments being renovated, and cannot say why they oppose it or offer an alternative. ...
Column Contributes to Divisiveness
The Rev. Clarence Grier ("Augusta Chronicle unfair to Walker, blacks," Nov. 19) said that The Chronicle is forgetting that state Sen.-elect Charles Walker is innocent until proven guilty. He forgot that Walker has indeed been proven guilty in years past, to the tune of $8,500 in ethics violations. The Chronicle calls Walker ethically challenged, and the newspaper is more than justified in doing so in light of Walker's past.
Too Few Pupils Apply Themselves
Dr. Frank Roberson ("Teachers' color irrelevant to pupils," Nov. 18) is right in his column. Too many black kids, particularly males, do not put forth the consistent, intensive studying necessary to achieve high levels of learning. Of course, the absence of studious effort is prevalent among whites, too. On the other hand, maybe cynicism is getting the best of this 34- year veteran.
